Real stump, real backyard.
From the yard, this one looked like a small, low stump — barely poking through the grass. It wasn’t. Underground it turned out to be old and fully dried out (not rotten, like we’d guessed), sitting in a raised mound above the rest of the yard, with a root ball reaching out in every direction. Getting all of it meant grinding out roughly a 10-foot circle instead of a tidy little hole.
This was our very first job — for a homeowner named Glenn. We didn’t know exactly what we’d find either. That’s kind of the point: what looks small on the surface isn’t always small underground, and we work the job that’s actually there, not just the one it looked like from the driveway.
$200 minimum, then it’s about the stump.
Every stump gets priced per inch of diameter, with a $200 minimum per visit — bring us two or three small stumps in the same trip and that one minimum covers all of them. From there, a few real factors move the number — none of them a mystery, all of them things you can see for yourself before we grind.
Roots & Flare
A normal root system is the base price. Moderate roots or flare add about 25%. Heavy roots or a multi-stem stump add about 40% — more wood underground means more grinding time, plain and simple.
Site Access
A backyard or moderate maneuvering job carries a small access charge over a driveway-adjacent stump. Tight access, fence openings, or heavy obstacles cost more — the machine has to fit through before it can grind anything.
Rock & Slope
Known or possible rock near the stump adds a surcharge — it’s hard on the teeth, and we plan for it rather than surprise you with it. Same for a moderate or steep slope; the machine has to work harder to stay put and stay level.
Tall Stumps
If a stump stands over 12″ tall and isn’t more than 18″ across, we top it before grinding — a quick extra step that keeps the grinder working safely and cleanly instead of fighting a stump that’s more like a short tree.
Your Call on the Grindings
Some folks want the wood chips left as a neat pile — good mulch for a flower bed or a low spot in the yard. Others want it hauled off completely so the ground is bare and ready. Either way’s fine; just tell us which, and it’s priced into your quote either way.

Per visit. Whether you’ve got one monster stump or several small ones, it’s a $200 minimum for us to come out, priced by the inch from there. A handful of small stumps in the same trip can often land right at that minimum.
